Following its victory in the Assembly and Municipal Council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has now emerged with a commanding lead in the Municipal Corporation polls, indicating a decisive push towards “Shat Pratishat” (100 percent) political domination in Maharashtra.
With a historic victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the BJP has cemented its control over India’s financial capital. The Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, has won enough seats to control 23 of the 29 municipal corporations.
While the BJP’s trajectory continues to rise, its partners, the Shiv Sena (Shinde group) and the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), have suffered a setback. On the opposition side, the Congress won the most seats among non-ruling parties, while the AIMIM’s victory in Muslim-majority wards has generated concerns among established political figures.
The objective of a “100 percent BJP” in the state, first set by BJP stalwart Pramod Mahajan in the 2000s and recently reiterated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, appears to be closer than ever. The BJP’s performance in these 29 corporations has caused shockwaves throughout the state’s political landscape.
In Mumbai, the BJP accomplished its major goal of removing Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena from the BMC. Although the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance projected a one-sided race, the Thackeray brothers (Uddhav and Raj) fought hard till the finish. Despite the Shiv Sena split, the Thackeray faction fared well in Marathi-majority wards, fueling a “Marathi vs Non-Marathi” narrative.
The BJP has emerged as the largest party in several key cities, ensuring that they will hold Mayoral positions alongside the Shinde faction in Mumbai, Nashik, Solapur, Pune, Nagpur, Navi Mumbai, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Akola, Amravati, Sangli, Kolhapur, Jalgaon, Dhule, Ahilyanagar, Panvel, Mira-Bhayandar, Jalna, Ichalkaranji, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
While the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, which has had success in Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, and Ulhasnagar, will occupy the mayoral position with the support of the BJP.
The findings shocked the NCP (Ajit Pawar group). Despite making the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad elections a matter of personal prestige, Pawar was soundly defeated. Analysts believe this result will reduce his authority within the coalition, potentially requiring him to function under stronger BJP monitoring in the future.
The Congress won a majority in Latur and became the largest party in Bhivandi and Chandrapur. Despite losing power in Mumbai, the Shiv Sena (UBT) had the most members in Parbhani. The ISLAM Party led in Malegaon, while Hitendra Thakur’s Bahujan Vikas Aghadi maintained its stronghold in Vasai-Virar.
The Bahujan Vikas Aghadi will be led by a mayor in Vasai Virar, the Congress Party in Latur, Chandrapur, and Bhiwandi, the Shiv Sena UBT with MNC backing, the SP in Parbhani, and the Islamic Party in Malegaon.
However, while celebrating the “record-breaking” victory, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned leaders and newly elected corporators against arrogance.
“The public voted for BJP candidates with high expectations. “We must work transparently and honestly to maintain their trust,” he said.
He emphasized the party’s ideological stance, stating that Hindutva and growth are interdependent.
“Hindutva is our soul and a way of life. It has connected us to the people. Our Hindutva is inclusive of everyone who loves this country,” he added.
