The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued guidelines for schools conducting practical tests for Class 12 students in the compartment category. According to the official notice, the extra practical tests for intermediate students will be held from July 29 to August 4, 2026. The board has declared that the Class 12 practical exam will be administered to all students who did not pass the main practical exam in any topic, as well as students who failed to pass both the theory and practical exams in any subject.
CBSE clarified that if a student is placed in the compartment category owing to Repeat in Practical (RP), they will only be required to take the practical test. For such students, retaking the compartmental CBSE Board theory examination is not required, as previously earned theory marks will be counted. Students who have earned ‘Repeat in Theory and Practical Both (RB)’ on their marksheets will be obliged to sit for both the practical and theory supplemental tests in 2026.
CBSE has urged all Class 12 students who are taking the extra practical tests to come to their respective schools by July 27, 2026, with a copy of their provisional marksheet and CBSE admit card. Regular students’ practical examinations will be held in their own schools, but privately registered applicants will take their theory exams at the designated centers.
In the event that a theory test centre lacks the appropriate infrastructure to conduct practicals in a specific topic, the CBSE Regional Office will arrange for an alternative venue, either at a neighboring school or another approved examination center. Students have also been urged to check the date and time of their practical examination and be at the site well before the allocated time.
The board has asked all of its Regional Offices to appoint external examiners for schools conducting Class 12 extra practical tests. Schools have been instructed to use only the practical response booklets provided by the Regional Offices and to ensure that all entries are completed accurately.
Internal examiners will be selected by the different schools from among their own teachers. CBSE has now ordered that schools send practical scores to the CBSE webpage on the same day the exam is administered. Once posted, the marks will be considered final, and no requests for changes from schools or examiners will be addressed.
