The Odisha government issued an alert to District Collectors regarding the possibility of a cyclone forming in the Bay of Bengal.
Collectors of districts likely to be affected by the possible cyclone were put on alert today at an emergency meeting convened by Special Relief Commissioner In-Charge Satyabrat Sahu, informed Executive Director of Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) Gyana Dash.
Government employees’ leaves have been canceled, and they have been asked to remain at headquarters, Dash added.
Earlier in the day, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that the current weather system is likely to form a cyclone around October 23 or 24.
“We have not predicted the intensity and possible area of landfall of the impending cyclone as it is yet to take the shape of a low pressure area,” Mohapatra clarified.
According to the IMD, the cyclonic circulation that formed over the south Andaman Sea and its surroundings on Monday has now moved to the north Andaman Sea and its surroundings.
It is expected that a low pressure area will form over the southeast and adjoining east central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours as a result of its influence.
The system is expected to move west-northwestward and consolidate into a depression over the central Bay of Bengal by October 22 morning.
Following that, it is very likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal.
