Fever is one of the most prevalent medical problems among children under the age of five. While the inconveniences caused by this often worry parents, most minor infections that cause high temperatures tend to go away within three to five days with the correct treatment and advice.

What causes a fever?

Fever is defined as an abnormal rise in temperature (equal to or more than 100 F or 37.8 C) caused by internal infection and is usually assessed with a forehead thermometer, external auricular thermometer, or oral thermometer. While all of these procedures are used to assess the body’s temperature, doctors advise adding one degree to the temperature reported through the armpits. Fever is a natural human body function that that boosts the immunity present in the body to kill the microbes by raising the natural temperature as a method to counter the infection.

Common symptoms amongst children

During fever, a child can become irritable, dull and inactive. Children under the age of five might also cry excessively, have a low appetite and constantly feel lethargic and sleepy.

Steps to take when the child is feverish

Ice cubes or freezing water should not be utilized to lessen the temperature, contrary to popular belief. Instead, use lukewarm water wipes for five to ten minutes. Make certain that the child is dressed in loose, light clothing. Warm clothing, such as sweaters and shawls, will raise the body temperature even more.

Fever caused by mild infections usually goes away within three to five days. However, if the fever persists, a pediatrician should be consulted. Children under the age of six are more likely to experience seizures if they have a high grade fever, rashes, or inadequate oral intake. As a result, it is critical to maintain the high temperature under control. Antibiotics, for example, should only be taken after consulting a doctor as additional tests can be required.

While fluid food such as coconut water, juice, soups, and kanji, combined with the child’s regular food (in smaller amounts), can aid in recuperation, oily foods should be avoided. It is best to breastfeed breastfed children.
