The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional office here has forecast hailstorms and strong winds in several districts on Friday.

Light rains, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected to hit isolated locations across Odisha over the next two days, according to the IMD.

Thunderstorms with lightning and hailstorms are very likely to occur at one or two locations in the districts of Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, and Kandhamal on Friday. Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur in one or two locations across the remaining districts of the state.

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are very likely in a few locations in south Odisha and one or two locations in north Odisha.

The IMD has issued a yellow warning for hailstorms and gusty winds for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Dhenkanal, Anugul, Boudh, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurdha, Nayagarh, Puri, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri districts on Friday.

A yellow warning has also been issued for Saturday in the districts of Boudh, Bolangir, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur, Sonepur, Nuapada, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh.

A cyclonic circulation over northeast Bangladesh and a trough stretching from this system to north Odisha will cause these unstable conditions. Incoming moisture from the Bay of Bengal will also aid convective activity while raising daytime temperatures.

As a result, the IMD predicts a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of 2-40 degrees Celsius over the next two days, with no significant change expected after that.

Meanwhile, Odisha has received significantly above-average pre-monsoon rainfall since the beginning of March. Between March 1 and April 5, the state recorded 81.9 mm of precipitation, a whopping 224% ‘large excess’ over its long-term average of 25.3 mm.
