The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave conditions will remain in Odisha for the next four to five days.
According to the IMD forecast, maximum temperatures in western districts such as Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, and Balangir will range from 43°C to 45°C, with dry north-westerly winds. The extreme heat is predicted to last until May 28.
On Sunday, temperatures in as many as 20 locations throughout Odisha exceeded 40°C. Western Odisha remained the hottest, with six areas above 45°C. Titlagarh was the hottest place in the state, with 45.8°C, followed by Boudh (45.6°C), Bhawanipatna (45.4°C), Sambalpur (45.3°C), Sonepur (45.2°C), and Balangir (45°C). Jharsuguda measured 44.8°C, while Hirakud and Nuapada exceeded 44°C.
Coastal areas such as Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Puri have recorded temperatures below 40°C, yet inhabitants are experiencing considerable pain due to excessive moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal. This has greatly raised the “real feel” temperature, making it feel like 45-50°C in several spots. Furthermore, nighttime temperatures remain high, offering no relief from the stifling heat.
Meanwhile, the IMD recommends that individuals avoid going outside during peak hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), stay hydrated, and take all essential precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
