Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions in India, affecting millions of people across all age groups. Fundamentally, diabetes arises when the body is unable to adequately control blood sugar levels, either as a result of inadequate insulin synthesis or improper insulin utilization.

The Ujala Cygnus Group of Hospitals’ Dr. Jaspreet Singh, MBBS, MD, DM (Endocrinology), has contributed to the discussion. The pancreatic hormone insulin is essential for facilitating the entry of glucose, or sugar, from food into the body’s cells, where it is transformed into energy. High blood sugar levels and long-term health hazards result from the failure of this mechanism, which leaves glucose in the blood.

Why are insulin injections necessary in type 1 diabetes

The immune system unintentionally targets and kills the pancreatic cells that produce insulin in people with type 1 diabetes. This indicates that the body doesn’t make much insulin on its own. Blood sugar levels increase dangerously high in the absence of insulin.

Daily insulin injections are necessary for these patients to survive. Insulin is the only effective blood sugar regulator for type 1 diabetes, in contrast to oral medications, which may be beneficial for type 2 diabetes.

Why do some type 2 diabetes patients also need insulin

Insulin resistance, or the body’s cells’ poor response to insulin, is frequently the first sign of type 2 diabetes. At first, oral medications and lifestyle modifications may help control blood sugar. However, insulin production may eventually decrease, and medication may become insufficient.

In order to maintain appropriate glucose levels and avoid issues at this point, doctors advise insulin injections. Insulin medication forms a significant part of many people’s long-term care regimen.

Why can’t insulin be taken as a pill

Patients frequently inquire as to why insulin is taken by injection rather than tablet form. The explanation is straightforward: if insulin is eaten, it is broken down by the digestive system, rendering it useless. The body can use it right away if it is injected straight into the bloodstream (using insulin pumps, pens, or syringes).

The benefits of insulin therapy

Regular insulin therapy helps:

  • Keep blood sugar within safe limits
  • Reduce the risk of complications such as kidney damage, nerve damage, and vision loss
  • Protect the heart from diabetes-related damage
  • Improve overall health and quality of life

Insulin shots are a lifeline for many patients, not just a choice. Insulin therapy enables diabetics to lead active, balanced, and satisfying lives with the right knowledge, skills, and supervision.
