The monsoon season is something that we all look forward to. The invigorating climate, the earthy aroma after the rains, and evenings spent with a hot cup of tea are just a few of the basic pleasures of the season. Although the rains provide relief from the summer heat, they are also associated with numerous ailments. If you’ve ever had a cold, sore throat, or unsettled stomach around this time of year, you’re not alone.

According to doctors, the monsoon generates conditions that facilitate the spread of infectious diseases. That doesn’t mean you need a comprehensive diet overhaul. Instead, a few simple lifestyle practices, combined with vitamin C-rich foods, can help boost your body’s natural defenses and keep you healthy throughout the season.

Why do we tend to fall sick more often during the monsoon?

The rainy season provides the ideal conditions for germs to multiply. Waterlogging, increased humidity, and abrupt temperature fluctuations can all contribute to the spread of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Contaminated food, contaminated drinking water, and mosquito breeding all raise the likelihood of sickness.

As a result, many people suffer from repeated coughs and colds, viral fevers, stomach illnesses, allergies, and fungal skin diseases during the monsoon.

According to a Consulting Physician, Cardiopulmonologist, and Diabetologist, a few simple actions can significantly reduce this risk.

“The monsoon season can bring a higher risk of common infections due to changing weather conditions and increased exposure to germs. While seasonal illnesses are more common during this time, they can often be prevented with a few simple precautions. Eating freshly prepared food, drinking clean water, maintaining good personal hygiene, and following a balanced, nutritious diet can help strengthen the immune system and support overall health throughout the season.”

Where does Vitamin C fit into the picture?

Although vitamin C is well-known for its immune-boosting properties, its importance extends beyond aiding in the recovery from a seasonal cold.

It promotes immune system function, aids the body’s collagen synthesis for healthy skin, and works as an antioxidant to protect cells from oxidative stress. Given that the skin is the body’s first line of defense against infection, maintaining good skin is especially vital during the humid monsoon season.

Dr Ankith Rai, Associate Director – Medical Affairs, Abbott India, says:

“Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that helps support overall health. It plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system, supports collagen production for healthy skin, and provides antioxidant protection. Including Vitamin C as part of a balanced diet can help strengthen the body’s natural defences and contribute to overall well-being.”

You don’t need supplements to increase your Vitamin C intake

One of the simplest ways to include more Vitamin C in your diet is by choosing seasonal fruits and vegetables.

Foods naturally rich in the vitamin include:

  • Amla
  • Guava
  • Oranges and other citrus fruits
  • Tomatoes
  • Bell peppers

Adding a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables to your meals also provides fibre and other nutrients that support overall health.

Small daily habits that make a big difference

Good nutrition works best when paired with healthy daily routines. Experts recommend following a few simple practices throughout the rainy season:

  • Drink clean, boiled or filtered water.
  • Eat freshly cooked meals and avoid stale food.
  • Wash your hands regularly and maintain good hygiene.
  • Stay physically active, even if you’re exercising indoors.
  • Get enough sleep every night.
  • Keep your skin clean and dry to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
  • Avoid letting water collect around your home to prevent mosquito breeding.

Healthy immunity starts with everyday choices

There is no food item that guarantees you will not get sick during the monsoon season. However, by establishing healthy daily routines, you can help boost your immune system and combat seasonal illnesses.

A well-balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, and vitamin C-rich foods are some of the most practical strategies to promote general health. Instead of waiting until you get sick, boost your immunity ahead of time so you can enjoy the rainy season without worrying about your health.
