Diabetes has become one of the world’s most common chronic diseases, affecting millions of people and creating a significant public health burden. Every year, World Diabetes Day serves as a global reminder of the critical need for increased awareness, prevention, and management of this condition. It emphasizes the importance of lifestyle changes, early detection, and access to high-quality treatment.

According to statistics, one in every ten persons globally has diabetes, with more than 90% having type 2 diabetes and over half having not yet been identified. However, in many situations, type 2 diabetes and its effects can be postponed or prevented by adopting and keeping healthy habits. World Diabetes Day is a chance to raise awareness about diabetes as a global public health concern, its risks, and what can be done to support prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.

Date:

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14 to mark the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who discovered the insulin hormone along with Charles Herbert Best in 1922.

History:

The International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) founded World Diabetes Day in 1991 in response to growing concerns about the disease’s escalating health risk.

The United Nations formally recognized World Diabetes Day in 2006, passing a resolution to that effect.

Significance:

Learning about diabetes mellitus and actively participating in its treatment is critical since problems are significantly less prevalent and severe in people with well-controlled blood sugar levels. According to the IDF, some of the ways people can help raise awareness of diabetes are as follows:

1. Engaging local or national policy-makers to ensure that all people with diabetes have access to the care they need.

2. Organising a ‘Learn about diabetes’ event in schools

3. Organising or participating in a local diabetes awareness walk.

4. Lighting up a local landmark, home, or workplace in blue, or arranging an activity with colleagues to raise awareness regarding diabetes.

Theme:

The theme for World Diabetes Day 2023 is “Access to Diabetes Care”. The theme encourages people to be aware of the diabetes mellitus set of metabolic disorders so that they can benefit from the education on disease and treatment, dietary changes, and exercise, with the goal of keeping both short-term and long-term blood glucose levels within acceptable bounds.

This World Diabetes Day, WHO will emphasize the importance of equitable access to basic care, as well as promoting awareness about how individuals with diabetes can reduce their risk of complications. Activities will also honor the experiences of people with all types of diabetes, encouraging those affected to take action, such as seeking and receiving necessary care.
