The rupee consolidated in a narrow range on Thursday, finishing 3 paise higher at 82.44 (provisional) against the US dollar, supported by higher domestic equities.
The local currency opened at 82.34 against the US dollar on the interbank foreign exchange market, reaching an intraday high of 82.26 and a low of 82.47.
It eventually settled at 82.44, up 3 paise from its previous close of 82.47.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which measures the strength of the US currency against a basket of six currencies, rose 0.29 percent to 105.40.
Brent crude futures rose 0.63 percent to USD 77.66 per barrel, the global oil benchmark.
The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 160.00 points, or 0.26 percent, to end at 62,570.68, while the broader NSE Nifty gained 48.85 points, or 0.26 percent, to 18,609.35.
According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital markets on Wednesday, offloading shares worth Rs 1,241.87 crore.
