River, a Bengaluru-based electric vehicle start-up, has unveiled its first product, the Indie e-scooter, which it claims is the SUV of scooters. The pre-ordered e-scooter costs Rs 1,25,000 (ex-showroom Bengaluru) after the FAME II subsidy, which the company is currently applying for.
According to the company, the e-scooter was created using a design-first approach at its Bengaluru R&D facility. According to the company, the Indie will introduce a new design with many unique features, including the largest storage space of 55-litres (43 litre boot space and 12 litre glove box). The e-scooter has a peak power of 6.7kW, a top speed of 90kmph, 18 degrees of gradeability, and a 4kWh battery that provides a claimed real-world-range of 120km (on Eco mode).
It has three riding modes, as do most e-scooters: Eco, Ride, and Rush. Using a standard charger, the Indie can be charged up to 80% in 5 hours.
The e-scooter has 14-inch wheels, the first in the Indian e-scooter segment, which allows for a higher riding position, improved rideability, and maneuverability on a variety of road conditions. It has a lock and load pannier-stays on the sides that provide a variety of customisation options for customers to serve different purposes.
It has a signature twin beam headlamp design and a unique tail lamp design to give the e-scooter a distinct look. The motorcycle-inspired clip-on handlebar improves handling and stability while also protecting the e-scooter panels if it falls.
The riding position is designed to accommodate people of various heights in order to support a wide range of riders. It claims to have the segment’s longest and widest seat, which provides greater comfort. The Indie also has a front food peg, a first in the Indian scooter segment. The comfort is enhanced by a twin rear hydraulic suspension and telescopic front suspension.
The deliveries are scheduled to begin in August 2023.
