The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional office said today that a low-pressure area formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts on Sunday, adding, “Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal adjoining the north Odisha-West Bengal coasts, a low-pressure area has formed over the same region with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards.”
Windy weather with gusty surface wind speeds reaching 45 to 55 kmph is expected across the north Bay of Bengal abutting the west-central Bay of Bengal, along and off the Odisha coast from June 25 to June 27 morning, according to the IMD. Fishermen are told not to venture into sea areas off the Odisha coast.
The IMD projected heavy to excessive rainfall in various districts of Odisha during the day in its meteorological bulletin for the following two days. An orange warning has also been issued for 10 Odisha districts.
Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in a few locations in Sambalpur, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bargarh, Deogarh, Bolangir, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Jharsuguda, with extremely heavy rainfall in one or two places in Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Boudh.
Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Nabarangapur, and Nuapada districts are all expected to receive heavy rain today.
The orange warning will remain in effect on Monday, with heavy to very heavy rain (7 to 20cm) falling in a few places in Bargarh, Bolangir, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Boudh, and Nabarangpur, and really heavy rain (>20cm) falling in one or two places in Balangir, Kalahandi, and Bargarh districts.
During this time, heavy rain (7 to 11cm) may fall in Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput.
