Odisha Police has initiated a state-wide special operation called “Operation Cyber Kachch” to boost cyber security and take tough measures against hackers. YB Khurania, the State Director General of Police, announced the operation during a high-level review meeting at the State Police Headquarters.
The operation has resulted in important breakthroughs, including the arrest of two hackers in Balangir district who opened bank accounts in the names of several people and defrauded them of more than Rs 5 crore. The cops confiscated 29 passbooks, 15 checkbooks, swipe machines, and mobile phones.
A case has been filed in Mayurbhanj district against four individuals suspected of using anonymous bank accounts (Mule Accounts) to commit cyber crime. Notices have been issued, and investigations are ongoing.
The initiative, which will run until February 27, 2026, attempts to regulate transactions between anonymous bank accounts and bogus SIM cards used in cyber crime. Odisha Police has developed a particular strategy to combat cybercrime, which includes identifying and apprehending operators who sell bulk SIM cards using fake IDs and monitoring ATM/cheque withdrawal hotspots.
The operation is based on intelligence from the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. Special task forces have been constituted in each district, led by the Superintendent of Police (SP) and DCP of the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police.
DGP Khurania urged the people to be cautious and avoid sharing personal information, emphasizing Odisha Police’s commitment to making Odisha a safe and aware cyber-state through “Operation Cyber Kachch”.
