The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has anticipated the formation of a new low-pressure region over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring extensive rain to Odisha during the next seven days.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation is currently active across Gangetic West Bengal and neighboring Bangladesh, with a height of 4.5 to 5.8 km above sea level. Favourable meteorological conditions may result in the creation of a low-pressure zone in the following days.
Senior meteorologist Dr. Manorama Mohanty stated that due to this system, Odisha will likely witness regular bouts of rain and thunderstorms during the next seven days. The intensity of rainfall is likely to rise beginning July 13.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for many districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, where thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are expected in some areas.
Rainfall was recorded in 13 locations across the state in the last 24 hours, with Gurundia in Sundargarh district receiving the most at 71 mm. From June 1 to July 10, Odisha experienced 341 mm of rain, 12% more than the typical average.
While six districts have had excess rainfall and five have gotten normal to above-average rainfall, four districts — Sundargarh, Nabarangapur, Deogarh, and Kalahandi — continue to experience deficit rainfall.
The monsoon trough and accompanying weather systems are expected to keep rainy conditions active over the state in the coming week.
