Stock Market Highlights on Monday, April 28, 2026: The Nifty50 and Sensex closed lower after Brent crude prices increased sharply due to anxiety over a potential peace accord between the US and Iran.
The Nifty50 closed 0.4%, or 97 points, lower at 23,995.70, while the Sensex closed 0.54 percent, or 417 points lower at 76,886.91.
Broader markets outpaced benchmark indexes. The Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices closed 0.28 and 0.42 percent higher, respectively.
Sectorally, the Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Bank underperformed, while the Nifty Oil & Gas and Nifty Metal thrived.
US President Donald Trump is not pleased with Iran’s proposal, according to news reports citing an official. Iran suggested a compromise to reopen the Strait of Hormuz while avoiding any mention of its nuclear program until the conflict in West Asia was resolved.
Brent crude was trading 2.78 percent higher at $111.24 a barrel as the crucial waterway, the Strait of Hormuz, remained closed while the US considered Iran’s proposal to end the war, contingent on Washington lifting the blockade.
