Stock Market Highlights on Tuesday, May 12, 2026: The Nifty50 and Sensex fell for the second session in a straight as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to cut energy use, overseas travel, and gold purchases fueled concerns about the West Asia war’s long-term economic impact.
The Nifty50 closed 436.30 points, or 1.83 percent, lower at 23,379.55, while the Sensex fell 1,456.04 points, or 1.92 percent, to 74,559.24.
In the broader markets, the Nifty MidCap and Nifty SmallCap indices fell 2.54% and 3.17%, respectively.
The Nifty IT and Nifty Realty sectors experienced the largest declines. The Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Media both underperformed. Meanwhile, the Nifty Metal and the Nifty Oil and Gas Index outperformed.
US President Donald Trump stated that the month-old ceasefire with Iran is on’massive life support’ after the latter made a ‘unacceptable’ proposal. According to a news report, the ceasefire was still fragile at this point. This also lowered investor risk sentiment.
Brent crude’s May future contract was trading 2.90 percent higher at $107.23 a barrel on the Intercontinental Exchange, with the supply disruption at the Strait of Hormuz expected to last longer than predicted following Trump’s remark.
